Limit value definition

The vibration risk is defined using two vibration values (action value and exposure limit value). The combination of these values provides the vibration strength of the device (in m/s²) and daily service life.

1) Action value
If the daily vibration stress is lower than 2.5 m/s², then there is a relatively low danger to health. In this case, the employer does not have to undertake any preventative measures.

2) Exposure limit value
If the daily vibration stress lies between the action value 2.5 m/s² and the exposure limit value 5.0 m/s² then the employer must ensure that the vibration stress to the operator does not increase further.

If the daily vibration stress is higher than the exposure limit value of 5.0 m/s² (and thus above the vibration stress limit), then the employer must take steps to reduce the vibration stress on the operator.
This can be made by reducing the operating time of the device or by using other work methods.

On average, the following table illustrates how long electrical devices can be operated.

Device type Vibration Action value Exposure limit value 5.0 m/s²
Impact drill 20 m/s² 7,5 minutes 30 minutes
Angle grinder 8 m/s² 47 minutes 3 hours 8 minutes
Sander 5 m/s² 2 hours 8 hours
Hedge trimmer 2,5 m/s² 8 hours "no limit" i.e. > 24 hours
